BAS/ESP LIGHT

BAS/ESP LIGHT
The gear shift is locked on my 2000 CLK 430 and in addition to this the BAS/ESP light is on while engine is running. I have gone through the step of manually unlocking the gear shift, but once the vehicle is returned to the park position it locks again. Can someone shed some light on this particular situation? Is this a simple fix, or does it call for a visit to the shop? Any response will be greatly appreciated!!!

RE: BAS/ESP LIGHT
Classic problem.
Brake light switch is damaged/mal adjusted.
The brake switch has two circuits.
One which controls rear brake lights and also the elctronic lock on the gear shift.
The second circuit inputs into the BAS/ESP etc.
Unusual BOTH circuits are showing a problem at the same time but this basically reinforces the cause.
Presumably you are aware how to get the vehicle out of PARK in an emergency.
Change the switch (relatively low cost) and all should be well.
