I am considering a purchase of a '95 SL600. The owner states it needs a wiring harnes and to re-build the throttle bodies due to degraded wires used in european cars in the 90's. Has anyone heard of this problem and what else might I expect? He estimates the cost at $6000.

Yup, and it will cost you a bunch more than that. Price out two throttle bodies (about 3500 each) and a wire harness (over $1500) for that car.
And then the car is only worth $8,500 when you are done spending 8,500 on parts. Check out private party sales prices on Edmunds.
Buy one that's had that work plus the AC evaporator changed already.
