'93 190E 2.3 Auxiliary Cooling Fan whine
Hello again ... yes,.. I bought 2 of my daughter's 190E's and often require knowledge transfer from the experts here :-)) I just didn't expect to need it for both vehicles so soon :-)) Anyhoo,... the '93 2.3 Auxiliary Cooling Fan works just fine, seems to be on all the time as soon as the vehicle warms up, but it is very loud, much louder than the engine itself. I have checked clearances around the fan shroud etc. and see no binding of any kind, but that's obviously not at a normal operating speed. There are no nicks etc. on the blades themselves that would make me believe they are scraping at high rpm either. The noise is not a shrill, just a loud fan noise, sort of like a fan that is sitting against a wall with nowhere to move air.. usually louder than in a window sill .
Any ideas ? Is there a way to libricate this fan or anything ? Thanks for the help, Padge

hey sleepwalker,... no restriction on airflow that i can tell.... haven't checked on maker of fan yet..... should be original, bought car as third owner with all paperwork showing MB shops doing any work. Believe that I guess ? I guess i'm just looking for what might make this noise inside the motor part of the fan ? or should there even be any ? Thanks, Padge

Ok... I'll pull it down to triple check for blockage or other issues.... even hook it up to some current to see if it is noisy stand alone .
thanks for the ideas. Padge

Sleepwalker,.... I did the basically dumb thing... went online and bought an original Auxiliary Cooling Fan, swapped out the old one and miserably listened to the same noise levels in the new fan :-(
I guess now I should more concentrate on the question of WHY does the fan stay on ALL the time when the car is running ?? I would assume it should only come on to cool down when needed... This fan comes on at engine startup first thing even after a night of not running the car at all... COLD .
What determines when this Aux. should run ? Where should I start ?
Thanks again for all your help,
Padge
