85 300D Turbo
My old roomate is going to give me his car. He owed me some money. It's quite a nice car and used to drive nice. His dad bought it brand new, so I'd be the second owner. It has a fair amount of miles on it, around 150000-175000 miles. I drove it a few times and it was surprisingly fast for a big fat diesel car, and did not smoke.

The problem is before he gave it to me, he was running late to school one morning, and ran it up a hill cold and hard, and it blew a rod. Believe it or not it was still running later that day, and I told him he should not start it again till it gets fixed. It has been parked ever since, almost a year now, and I want to resurrect this car. The rod luckily did not blow a hole in the block, and a local mechanic said it could be replaced for about $1000. He said mercedes dieselengines are built extremely tough, and that a new rod/bearings/piston and rings on only that one cylinder could be replaced! The engine has not been torn down yet, and a second opinion mechanic said it's either that, or a bad fuel injector. A fully rebuilt engine for this car is $4500-7000!

Is this car worth trying to fix? Could a bad fuel injector really make a diesel sound that loud? Ever hear of just one rod/bearings/piston/rings being replaced, without a complete rebuild?

Thanks for the help in advance everyone.
