Default '73 450SL 117.982 Motor Rebuild

Hello, I'm rebuilding a '73 450sl and I can't figure out the timing for the life of me. I have the shop manual on CD but it's very vague. I thought I had aligned the cam sprockets before I torqued the heads but looks like I didn't. I aligned the "V" in the spacer behind the sprocket to the little mark at about 2 o'clock on the cam towers. I then aligned the distributor gear so that the driver would point to 23mm down from teh center of the top right timing bolt hole. NOT!!! When I turn it over by hand, everythings all out of whack. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Hi IMarty,

Was the crank in position #1TDC position, when the v lined up?

The number 1 piston was all the way up and the keys lined up. Is the woodruff key on the crank supposed to be at about 10:00? The shop manual is very vague.
