Default 117.983 Ignition Timing

Hi All - I think I am new to this forum, but then again maybe I've been here before!! Either way, howdy!
Have just put a 117 motor in my Finnie, and hence do not have any manuals for the 450. Is there anyone who could help me out with with the initial timing setup for the motor? Any help would be appreciated - even if you can point me in the right direction.
I don't wish to by a workshop manual for the 450 as I only have a part of the car!!

Cheers

i will assume that you are a mechanic and knows the basics, by then i don't need to elaborate and save effort on typing.
i am a lazy typist and my right shoulder aches because of holding the mouse for long. any remedy with this except cutting it off?
last night i went to massage with two girls stepping on my back but it doesn't help.

first, was it really 117.983 or 117.963?
could you tell me what car model you got so we can make corrections.

117.963:

CAMSHAFT CODE NUMBER INTAKE VALVE OPENS
08 / 09 22 degrees
14 / 15 18 degrees
60 / 61 12 degrees
62 / 63 24 degrees
70 / 71 16 degrees

i will continue.................

remove rocker arm and valve compensating element on intake valve of cylinder 1 and 8 and install valve adjusting screw instead of it.
you can make an improvised one. the main purpose is to eliminate movement. you can also skip this but must watch out very carefully of the movement.

rotate crankshaft until the cam tip rest against intake valve of first cylinder in upward position.

turn valve adjusting screw until rocker arm rests free of play against camshaft heel.

clamp dial gauge with preload of 3mm. the measuring pin should rest against on the valve spring retainer in an accurately vertical position.

set large pointer to zero.

i will continue...............

rotate the crankshaft until the pointer of the dial gauge return by 2mm to a preload of 1mm. the valve lift will then be 2mm.

in this position, the valve on the vibration damper (pulley) should be in the table as i have written on the first page.

perform this test on the intake valve of 8th cylinder by repeating the steps.

okay, you must know that 1 and 8 are running mates. you can use agled woodruft key to adjust or the nearest you can get using the original woodruft key.

in my experience, it is better you retard a little that going advance!

have fun.

Thanks for all that!! More than I expected so soon.

However, it is definitely a 117.983 motor. The motor came from a 280S that had obviously had an engine swap, and is now in my 220Seb. Therefore my only connection to the car is the engine number - which accounts for it being a 450SE/L (73-75).

Hope this doesn't mean you have to type everything again - perhaps try dosing your arm with Deep Heat prior to typing sessions. It might be so numb (or burning!) that it the aching won't bother you!!!

Hi Again

I forgot to add something in my last post which will probably save you a bit of typing...basically, what has happened is that the motor came without the dizzie which has now been replaced. Therefore, I am really only requiring the ignition timing so that it can be set before the motor is started. Everything else is ready to go, with the motor sitting at top dead.
There is a sticker on the rocker cover that has this info on it, but it is rather mangled and I'll be buggered if I can read it!![&:]

just follow the timing guide on the camshaft and crankshaft since you cannot identify the camshaft number anyway,

what is a dizzie?

Oh sorry - I don't tend to think about the 'slang' terms I use! Dizzie is my affectionate term for distributor.
What I am looking for is just the ignition timing (X degrees BTDC etc).

there is a guide on the base for it, just align them.

the rotor should be pointing on the cylinder #1 sparkplug cable. just on the edge where the cap meets the body, you will see the guide also. it can only go one way.

get a timing light and adjust the timing to about 7 or 10 degrees at idle speed, then finely adjust from that point.
