Default 722.6 noise.

I have a 99 S320 W140 with a 722.6 Transmission. Tonight on the way home it started making a noise.. After some basic troubleshooting I know this...

1. The transmission makes noise with car running and gear shifter in neutral or park.
2. If I shift into reverse or drive and dont move the noise goes away.
3. If I start moving the noise comes back..

The noise sounds like a rattle with in park or neutral. When moving it sounds much worse like gears clashing and you can "feel" something hanging as the car moves forward..

I have found a rebuilt unit from a company in AZ but I am worried that they will keep my core charge because there is something very wrong with this one..

Does anyone have any ideas what might have happened to this thing? I can replace the transmission myself but if its something not too bad I might be temped to take it to a transmission shop..

Thanx in advance.

Bill

i have o/h a transmision with the same problem and costs about $800 on the parts.

it can be fixed, but got to replace many things esp the clutch housing which is rubbing and makes the noise.

Thanx for the fast response.. Do you think this is something that would keep my from getting my core back?
I can fix most anything.. are there any special tools that are required?
Is this common for this model?

what do you mean by "core"?.

yes, you can fix it even in your backyard. once you pull up the upper half, everything is exposed. then it is composed of 3 components which is easy to remember. no special tools required, just another person to help you push the spring plate down while you do/undo the lock ring.

not common, but you can expect many things from worn out AT.
