Default 560SEL rear suspension

Does anyone know where the top nuts of the rear shocks are located on a 86 560SEL. It looks like the rear electric seats have to come out to get to them. And also can the shocks be replaced by standard heavy duty ones if I don't want to mess with the self levelling stuff. I read sleepwalker's response to post 6582 but I am still comfused.

thanks

you really need to remove the seat and rear back rest.

you will see the round plastic cover on the rear wall, the top mount is in there.

let the car stand on it's wheels when removing the nuts to avoid the load of the piston being extended.

yes, you may use the ordinary shock absorber. check the spring if it's high enough. adjustments can be done by changing the upper rubber space mounting.

You can use a standard shock but you must disconnect the plumbing for the self leveling if you have it. The residual pressure of self leveling adds to the rear spring, so the rear will sit lower, different spring pads or springs can correct it. I would advise repairing the system.
