300td trouble
Ok, Im new to this site and also owning a mb. I bought a 1987 300 td wagon. seems to run great then it started running hot and bub bling in the burp bottle Im the second owner and the first kept it in garage and drove it from PA to DE often. it has 280,000 on the odometer. other day my wife said it was running hot all the way home, I waited for two days and filled it with water and when it was running the water was dripping out the muffler and out the tail pipe. A family member who works at MB dealer said to just put a head gasket in it. Another shop I talked to said you are supposed to change the antifreze reguarly or the head rots out. Im confused and dont know should I pull the motor apart or isnt it worth it. The mechanic told me a new head is over $2000. just for a bear head. I thought about changing the drivetrain to gm and making it simple to work on. It still starts and runs fine just cannt keep antifreeze in it.
I'd change the head gasket before you do anything. A kit shouldn't be too terribly expensive and if you have that and a good repair manual it's the cheapest way to go about it. If that doesn't fix your problem, THEN i would start considering a motor swap or another car.
