240D heater plug timer
I have an old 240D 123/1979 in good shape but having problem in starting. The heater plug does not work when the surrounding atmosphere is cozy or warm, but will work when the ambiance is cold to almost freezing. Could somebody show me where to find the heater timer and how to replace it if there is any procedure or sequence needed. I thank you.
PS maybe my term or name for the part is not right or correct ie. heater plug timer

RE: 240D heater plug timer
could you please give us the first 6 digit chassis number?
am not sure if your car is using fuel pre-heating thermostat or glow plugs.
the pre-glow relay timer is located on the engine compartment on the left wheel arch. open the hood and look in that area... a black box. an NTC (negtive temperature coefficient) resistor in the pre-glow time delay relay registers the relay ambient temperature.
replacing it is easy as you can see.

RE: 240D heater plug timer
thank you sleep walker, at the moment I could not provide the chasis no. because I am out on field work but as soon as I will be able to go home and be able to get this no. I will email it to you.
If I am not mistaken I did open that black box and only found three relays which I replaced but nothing that I can observe changed. I was also informed by somebody that the timer is inside the steering column but I dare not to open it.
This is a big help ie. your suggestion which makes me more confident in checking that black box. I thank you again and I will email you the chasis no. as soon as I can get it.

RE: 240D heater plug timer
you're right, it's using a pre-timer relay. attached is a photo on how it looks like.

RE: 240D heater plug timer
as i have mentioned earlier it was located on the wheel housing inside the engine compartment. am just not so sure if on the left side or right side.
am sorry that i haven't work on that model before. although i have been in germany for training a few time, it was always for the newer model.
if you find a component with the following part number, then that's the timer:
001 545 22 32
001 545 35 32
001 545 97 32
002 545 05 32
123 540 15 45
those are the only available part numbers for your car. the first two numbers are my best guess.
cheers.
