2001 S500 door lock assist
Doors are closed pneumatically and powered by a unit in the boot (PSE (Pneumatic Security unit).
Not sure if each door has its own door close solenoid in the PSE .
Since problem is only one door it is either the actuator in the door (door specific) or the PSE which powers all door closing (and locks).
The PSE is a common cause of problem, so its the most likely. Simple to change but quite expensive especially on the S Class with the door closing feature.
Maybe somebody can confirm whether the PSE has individual solenoids per door (The w140 did but I'm notsure on the w220).
If not then it must be at the door end.
Hope this helps.

snanceki is correct, this probably is a PSE system issue. For my car, I use www.alldata.com for DIY repair info. Worth the annual fee. The pump is located in the left rear of the trunk next to gas tank, behind a trunk area panel . Usually the problem with any door closure assist issue is the pump assembly first needs to be checked for hoses connections and an internal cleaning of the pump assembly. The PSe pump cleaning/repair repair steps for my caris at http://www.v12uberalles.com/Closing_Assist_Pump.htm if you need it. You can try removing and reinstalling the fuses for PSE system to see if that resets the system, but usually the problem will reappear. For my car, I remove fuses 3 and 11 in rear fuse box, in right rear of trunk above the battery, behind a small door panel.
I have a 2002 S430 & the trunk assist closer stopped working. I called a Mercedes Parts dealer (I got the 1-800 # from Star Mag) & he sent me a diagram of the trunk & another of the door closing system. It appears each door has seperate units. If you send me your email address I will forward thediagram & phone #to you. llbrew91@aol.com
My trunk closer had a split in the air passage that directs the air pressure to the closer. The opener passage was OK.

You replied about this issue four years ago. I hear a loud bang in my driver door when I closed it while seated in a 2002 S430 with 48,000 miles. After that all the other doors continued working properly but the driver door pull assist does not. Do you have any thoughts as to what it needs or other advice?
