This sounds like the EASY ACCESS SYSTEM working as it should.
When you turn the key OFF/ remove it the steering column goes to a predetermined position to enable you to exit the car more easily. Likewise the seat goes back.
When you insert the key, shut the door etc it should return to your preset preference position.
If the movement and stop locations are all over the place then maybe there is a connection problem somewhere.

Hope it is that simple but in my experience the travel limit switches (or whatever) do give trouble if the system has been deactivated and used for long periods of time in that state.
I never got to the bottom of why my vehicle (w220) did this. The problem was initially intermittent but after I had used the system for about 2 weeks (It had been turned OFF throughout its previous owner experience 90k) all started to work OK. Problem incidence reduced during the initial two weeks.
I inspected everything in the system (e.g. removed column switches, inspected all CAN connections) but could find no definitive reason for the problem.
The last 30k have been fault free!
