2001 230 kompressor key turns but does not crank over. HELP!!!

2001 230 kompressor key turns but does not crank over. HELP!!!
The battery died on my 2001 230 kompressor, after replacing the battery I place the key in the ignition I can turn it and all the lights come on including the radio but the car will not crank over almost as if not recognizing the key. Does anyone know what is going on and if the key does need to be recoded does anyone know how to do this? THANKS
