Default 2000 E320 EGR problem (P0400)

Hi everyone, new to site as I just bought my very first MB. 2000 E320 (161K) Love the car already.
However, Check engine light came on last night. Pulled codes - P0400 Exhaust gas Recirculation flow.
Tried to find on forum a way to fix EGR system ( search function on this site not very user friendly or maybe its just me). Something about cleaning the lines or checking the solinoid valve? I have no idea how to go about this.
notes: Engine sounds fine, although at Idle (in gear but with foot on brake) RPM = 500 is this normal? Seems way low to me. In park it idles at 700 RPM. I see some steam coming out of exhaust up to 5 mins after start. is this normal?

Can anyone help me?

Pull the EGR off. The tube going to it - disconnect it, pull it out (it's a bent piece and you have to wiggle it around and even pull hard to get it out), inspect it. Probably has a 1/8" hole in the gunk inside it. Break the gunk out with a screwdriver, then clean it, and put it all back together.

Thanks for answer! That is exactly what it was. End of pipe was filled with goo with litually only a 1/8" hole left open.
Cleaned it out and reinstalled. Check engine light went off. hurray!

How do you find the EGR, where is it in the around the engine? can I see some diagrams? Can I do it or I have to take it to the dealership.
Need help!
Appreciated !!

You'll need a large open end wrench for the pipe fitting (22mm maybe? not sure), a 10mm socket to get the air intake pipe off, a 10mm socket with a swivel and an extension to get the egr off.

It's at the back of the engine.

Go to buymbparts.biz, look up your car, find the egr. There should be a picture of it there.

But really, if you don't know what you are doing and not feeling mechanically inclined, find an independent Benz shop, not the dealer.

The dealer will sell you a new egr and a new pipe, at outrageous prices. I am guessing the total bill would be about 500 bucks. Have your indy pull the pipe out and clean it, Should only cost about an hour labor time max.
