Default 190d transmission

The transmission on my 1987 190D has died and the shop is quoting me $3000.00+ to repair or replace. I am considering finding a good used or rebuilt one and swapping it myself. I have replaced a transmission on a toyota landcruiser before so I am not totally unfamiliar with the work. I would be interesting in hearing from some here what some of the difficulties I might encounter could be and perhaps a steer towards a good parts source.

TIA

thanks for the quick reply. It shifted harder and harder over several months until it quit shifting at all. The shop said "the transmission is bad" without being more specific.

How high will I need to lift the car for the transmission jack to clear once the transmission is unbolted?
