Default Performance question

Hey guys I'm new to the MB world but not to diesels. I have an 84 300D that is all bone stock. It has a weird shift from 1st to 2nd like it slams into the 2nd gear. I'm still trying to figure that out. My big question is how do I get some more horsepower out of her without killing my fuel mileage or dumping a bunch of money into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey forcedinduction, what would be your mods you would do, if any, to a simple daily driver around town and some freeway travel to get a little more umph out of it and fuel mileage.

I'm limited in my diesel experience to cummins so this mercedes stuff is a whole other monster.
