Default What is this part?

As a new '82 MB 300D Turbodiesel owner, I have plenty of questions more significant than this, but I'll start with trying to figure out what this under the dash part is?

I was pulling the passenger side dash apart in order to remove the AC expansion valve, and a small black metal piece of metal dropped out. I looked around but really don't know what it is and where it goes ... what is it?

Thanks ... I'm not noticing any change in heat switching at the moment, but at spring/summer temps without AC working it is hard to tell?

My goal for the short term is to get the system dry then put in the new compressor, dryer/evap and expansion valve. I'm debating buying a Harbor Freight manifold system and adding my own oil and charge ... or to take it to a shop and have their system do it??? Thoughts?
