Transmission removal?
As you know I have a 240D with a broken friction band. Today I started to take the transmission out as a low mileage replacement that I purchased arrived. I removed all the bell housing bolts, 6 bolts from the torque converter, all control stuff and removed the rear support. NOW, how do I get the driveshaft off? I have it unbolted on the rubber coupling, I unbolted it from the rear axle coupling and removed the bolts holding the carrier bearing up to the frame. I noticed a short spline section near the carrier bearing but the short shaft to the transmission has a very stiff spring inside it that I would need a large prybar to move it. Can someone tell me the correct procedure?
Thanks,

MB/Techman asks about the problem, well the original transmission was slipping when I got the car. It would move if you pushed the car while in Drive. I dropped the valve body and found a clutch friction band broken. I found a transmission in Oklahoma USA with 96k miles on it. I got all the bell housing bolts out but couldn't remove the driveshaft which I posted the questions about last night.
The next problem I will have is after I loosen the nut and remove the drive shaft and get the starter off IS that the "new" transmission has some sand on and near the input shafts which will need to be flushed or gently removed to prevent the sand from getting into the transmission. Anyone have any ideas on that dilemma?

I couldn't plug the holes as the sand was too close, I tipped the trans on end and flushed and wiped away from the drain back holes. Replaced the torque converter seal, installed the transmission, changed filter and pan gasket. We test drove it today FINALLY! It seems to take a long time to shift, then shifts with little or no flare(jerking). It acts like there is overdrive which a 300 owner said his has. Now to replace engine fluids and filters.
Thanks again to everyone for help and insights!
