Default Totally new to diesels but...

Long story on how I ended up with an 83 300SD. Anyway, it will be here in a few days. I know absolutely nothing about diesels.

Have searched on "start" on a bunch of other terms and have read a lot, but the basic question is What is the proper procedure to start one of these things. [sm=dontgetit.gif] With glow plugs is there a button or something you press first? Does this mean you can't add a remote starter etc?

Oh how I long for the easy old petrol days. Thanks.

I know that u can add remote start but i am not sure how. Not sure on ur model but on my diesel u just turn the key to position 2 wait till the glow plug light goes out and crank the motor. Easy as that. an owners manual would tell u how to start it also if u dont have one look on ebay.

Don't worry about it my dad got me my 300sdl from an auction when i was 14 and no one there knew how to start it and i was the only one that thought to look in the glovebox for the manual. So all these licensed drivers at an auto auction and it took a 14 yo to start the car. So it wasnt a stupid question we are here to help.

I'm new too but after reading this forum and my owner's manual, my '82 D I switch the key until the glow plug light comes on, then wait until it goes off, THEN WAIT MORE! until you hear the relay for the glow plugs click off, ususlly about 20-30 more seconds, or so it seems. That is important. The light does not synchronize with the relay for some electrical reason I have not cared to look into. Anyway, if you wait it is much better for the engine and saves electrical power for the starter. My 2 cents worth as a newbie.. skp
