Default Surging while driving....

I was driving down the road tonight. and my 240d starts surging, got out, checked to make sure my linkage was good, i had put about 6 gallons of fuel in 20 minutes earlier, just doing some regular checks, changed my fuel filters about 5k miles ago, im really unsure.
my car has 365k miles on it. Most everything is original. exception of clutch, battery, alternator, and some suspension work. aside from that ive had no problems.
I would check the airfilter, but i designed and built a coldair intake approx. 1k miles ago.
Im honestly all out of ideas,
Soon i will be doing a 3.0 TD swap out of a 82' 300sd.
I just need to keep my 2.4 alive for now....any advice is greatly appreciated.

my "cold air" is designed the same way as the factory,
all of the bolts on the factory air cleaner broke off in a matter of 2 days,
i was unable to find the replacement bolts.
my engine is not any louder, and i still use about half of the factory parts.
just i could not stand the ratteling from the air canister bouncing off the intake manifold...

the cruise control has been unhooked the whole time ive had the car.. forgot to mention that part.

Since your most recent change to anything in the car before the surging started was adding fuel, that's what I would check first. Perhaps you put in gasoline by mistake or hit the bottom of the seller's tank and got some water. Change your filters and run through your tank then refill.

ill try that...its probably a good idea to go ahead and get new filters on there anyways....my clear one looks like it has a fair amount of debree...does anyone know of an additive of somesort that would help me to get rid of the algea and what not that could be in the system?? im looking to keep it good, i will want to have an extra motor which would be the one that i am running now...that way when i get my 617, ill be able to play with and see if the machine shops can play with it, actually make some reliable horsepower...
we do alot of custom grinds, rods, fixing to experiment with injector flow on mine after i get this all figured out...

thanx for your help..
