Hi I have a 1983 300dt. When I first start it in the morning It runs very rough and puffs of white smoke come out. The compression is good. If I race the engine a few times it smooths out and doest smoke at all. When the engine is warm It runs fine. It has 210,000 miles on it. Any suggestions?

 

White smoke when cold...

1.White smoke is normal its just the hot exhaust air making that white smoke.....

Idle rough Possiable causes

1. Valve Adjustment Required if not done....Cost your around $200 Must be done every 2 years or 15,000 miles

2. Glow plugs are probaly loosing its ability to heat up, check if ok, if not then replaceALL good or badjust replace all, it saves you time, not expansive to buyand nothard to replace...

3.How cold is your place, if 32*F suggest to add some additive into your fuel system recommended brand Power House Diesel Supplement, but other otherbrandwould workjustfine
(MAKE SURE ITS FOR DIESEL ONLY)...

Thanks, the white smoke only puffs out when the car misses at cold idle. Its not constant. Also sometimes the glowplug light comes on other times I have to cut the ignition off then on again and it will come on. Does this mean a bad glowplug?

 

that could be a glow plug relay that is faulty or the fuse which is just a thin stip copper that connects positive and negative, its located near the fire wall i can't exactly remember where is the location....

 

What does the valve adjustment intail? I'm sure it hasn't been done in a while on mine.
