Default 1984 380 V8 Smoke and increased oil usage

Hello All

This car started using about half litre of oil every 500Km's---also evidence of a little smoking.

No loss of power or other symptoms but great confusion about 'what' is wrong. One dealer says the heads must be removed (expensive!)---another that it may need work on injectors etc etc.
Another thinks it may just be valve stem oilseals that can fairly easily be replaced.

Can any readers with V8 Mercs give any steerage on their experience with oil usages and mild smoking at times and probable causes and cures.

All help much appreciated.

Hi, im from Argentina, i was reading, and first i would say that you have to never came back to the garage that said that the failure is because of the injecter, second you have check the compresion in each cilynder, probably you notice that is low and you have to replace the rings, tou probably dont detect a lack of power because that kind of engine have a lot of torque. Please check the compression and let me know

Ale

Pd: Sorry if i make mistakes, but my english is out of practice.

From my experiences, mild smoking is a sure tell sign that some liquid is usually in a place that it shouldn't be. The worst case scenario is thatsomething in the head might be starting to go. (Head work tend to be a bit expensive. As mentioned earlier, check your rings and compression in each cylinder. If it's the rings that definately means that the smoke is caused and oil comsumption is caused by oil leaking past the rings into the chambers. Easy problem to find. The price of the problem may not be so easy unless you are a DIY.
