speedometer cable replacement 124
I need to replace the speedo cable in my 1991 300D. I can't figure out how to get the instument cluster out.
It is simple on the old 240D but not obvious on this car. Anyone know what needs to be done?

I'm guessing this is the same as my 87 300d.
1. Disconnect speedo cable at trans.
2. Instrument cluster can then be pulled out directly by using a special MB tool. It's essentially a stiff wire with T handle on one end and short right angle hook on the other. It's possible to use a welding rod to make a usable tool, but not real eaasy to use.
3. You simply push the tool alongside the cluster with the hook lined up with the space. Then turn 90 degrees to hook the rear of the cluster. There are clips at the back, so it's best to pull at points near these clips. I think there are 3 spaced across the top and one each on the sides about 3/4 way down.
Obviously you have to be careful not to scratch anything visible. The job certainly isn't as easy as the 123's.
