When driving to work today a noise started behind the instrument cluster that sounded like demons rising from hell. It started at 5 mph, got louder up to 20 mph and leveled out. Not tied to engine rpms, just speed. Speedo still works, but quivers a little- as was myself. Has anybody changed one of these? Could it need lubrication? The cable in there has about 50K and 10 years on it. 79 300D

Thanks for the redirect. I had searched this forum. It is really hard to believe that is the problem, but mywifescar describes the noise as mine sounds. at first i thought it was coming fom the 4 inch speaker i had just replaced, then the dash... Come on sun, warm this day up so i can have my benz back!

 

Just got the car out of the shop- The problem was the end of the speedo cable was rounded. The mechanic cut a little off, lubed the cable and speedo gear and it is fixed. No cell phone in mine.
