Default Roof won't close

I have an 85 300D Turbo Sedan. The sunroof has never opened, but I can hear the motor. There is a grinding noise above my head, almost like some gear is stripped or jumping off the track. The other day, I hit the button, meaning to hit the rear defroster, and it opened slightly. Now, I cant get it to shut the whole way. It does not leak (I used a hose to see) but from the outside you can see that it is not completely closed.

I really dont care if it works, but I want it closed the whole way, can I push it closed or something? Do I have to take the whole roof liner out and actually fix it to make it close? I would hate to spend huge bucks to get it to shut.

In the trunk on the drivers side there is a manual way to shut the roof using a socket set. At least thats where mine is in my 1981

If you had a grinding noise in the roof near the opening, then you may not be able to shut it using the emergency method, but it is most definately worth a try. If it doesn't work you may have to open it further to remove the inner lining and see what has happened.
