Oil Dipstick

Oil Dipstick
Yes, the oil really is that black - I presume it needs to be changed.
QUESTIONS:
1. What do the indentations mean relative to the oil level?
2. Does this look like the original dipstick? (I see no markings anywhere.)
Thanks - David

I bought it used with no indication as to the most recent oil change - I had our son get it changed to set a baseline for future reference - and because I needed them to put it on a lift I see if they could ID a fluid leak I am seeing in the driveway. I intend to do the oil changes myself in the future - especially since they charged me $100. for this one ($59. for the oil, $16. for the filter, $25. for labor.)
Further questions:
1. Is 8.5 quarts at $6.95 per quart typical?
2. The oil filter # they cite is S2930 which looks like an STP brand - is it junk that we should plan to replace sooner rather than later?
3. They said that the leak is an oil leak in the rear - is that even possible? (In the rear of a vehicle I only know about brake fluid, grease in the CV, & axle grease.)
This is a garage that I used to trust, and that I want to trust, but I'm starting to wonder ...
