I am considering the perchase of a 1974 240D. I should also add that I have never owned a Mercedes or a diesel for that matter. The odometer shows 91000 but I assume milage is at least 191,000 if not more. I tried to do some research online and discovered that 74 was the first year for the 240.

Price is pretty reasonable and the body looks straight and interior looks clean. Was this a problem year for the 240D? I have read that this diesel was under powered but did get decent milage and was reliable. Any other things to beware of or questions to ask when making the purchase?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Thanks for the information.

I perform all the maintenance on my families current vehicles and do have experience with older cars. I have a 69 camaro in our stable however as mentioned before I have no experience with diesels.

Do they require the same maintenance? I know there are many arguments about oil change intervals but I am very religious about changing every 3000 miles. Does a diesel require more maintenance?

My wife spoke with the owner this morning (this will be a car she drives) and the car has 209k on the odometer. He did say the motor mounts would need to be replaced at some point. Is this pretty common?

I am going to speak with the gentleman later today to see what else I can find. He is asking 2490, does that seem fair for this car? Body is very straight and paint is excellent.

Basically my wife and I would like to purchase a car for her as a daily driver. She owns he own business and averages 10000 miles a year. She currently has a Yukon and we love the vehicle ( and plan to keep it) but it is not the most efficient when tooling around town.

Motor mounts collapse over time, causes vibration throughout the car, very common. I would advise the wife drive it first, to verify acceleration is ok for her. if you maintain an older Camaro, then motor mounts are a simple r/r. Go by "forcedinductions" guidelines for service.
