Default Milage expectations

What type of milage should I expect from my 1978 240D - 193,000 miles. I've generally seen 33-35 MPG listed on sites that are SELLING MB diesels, are these accurate estimates? I'm confident of the vehicle's durability but with fuel being almost $3/gal. (San Francisco) I want it to make economical sence as well.

Thanks.

My 82 240D with auto is getting around 28 in mostly highway driving at 65-70 mph. I think 33-35 is never going to happen in one of these cars, just think about the weight they carry.

My 300D gets about 25-30 on average, 30 being highway. The 33-35 is almost never reachable. If you are getting in the high 20's then your good. Id say any lower than 24-25 you may want to purge the engine, have the injectors cleaned/replaced, valves adjusted.
