Default how to clean an immersion tube transmitter ?

I finally removed the tank on my 123 240D . It had rusted and produced a lot of gritty black scunge. I took the tank to a shop for cleaning but I want to clean the above mentioned item. Can it be easily diassembled? Also , now that the tank is clean , should it be sealed and with what? Since the fuel is oil , I'd think keeping the tank full as much as possible would prevent further rust. I've been driving the car for several years but before that it was stored for several years. I wonder if during that storage period was when it rusted .I further wonder if the rust stayed more or less put until this Summer when for about the last 2 months the temp has been over 100 every day. When I drained the tank at about 10pm the fuel was quite hot still. Might it have desolved the rust?
