Hello! Questions about a 1970 220d:)
Hello all, I am the proud owner of a 1970 220d 4 door that recently was hauled into my yard. It was running about 5 years ago and since has sat covered. Car has faded paint but absolutley no rust in the trunk or floorbords. I have a few questions about this car that maybe one of you could answer
1. Is there a light that should come on for the glow plugs, telling me to wait to start it?
2. I have drained the tank and replaced to old diesel that was in there. It smelled old. Bled the fuel filter using the small pump on the side of the engine, and then the injection block. I am not getting any fuel up to the injectors from the injection pump. It has a small red cap that says Oel (oil) on the injection pump. Im not sure what to put in there for oil. I checked, and it is getting clean fuel to the inj. pump. I sprayed the intake with ether and she wants to start, the glow plugs feel nice and warm. Does anyone have any information on this injection pump? Is it something that is timed? I don't dare take it apart without getting some information.
Any and all thoughts would be appreciated
This car could be beautiful with some tlc and a paintjob.

Good morning and I have a few answers for you.. I have a 69 200d, love this little car..
1- You turn the key to the farthest position, then you pull the starter switch about 3/4 the way out, you will feel it change a little like its hitting a different position, you hold it there until the element, directly in front of the steering column on the dash starts to glow orange. Hold it there a second and pull the lever our all the way. There is a little black **** close to the key that isnt marked for anything, that is to adjust your idle. Once you get it fired play around with that, its a helpful little item. You may have to give a little throttle when turning it over as well.
Item #2, you should change the filters and maybe even put a new little plastic one in line. You can put motor oil in that little red cap, just put some in it, dont fill it to the top, just give it a drink. DO NOT USE ETHER!! It sounds like a good plan, but its bad for the little mill. Use WD-40, the ether is going to choke the little monster out.
And my final item, call your local interstate battery place and tell them you are looking for a battery for this car, after they tell you the crazy price, tell them you would like a blem if they have one. Its a perfectly good battery that has some cosmetic defect and they cant sell it. I got one for mine for $30.
It took me a year to get my car road ready, I only drive it in the summer. I would not get rid of that car!! Good luck man... Send me a message if you need more help...

(I know this is an old thread but it's the closest thing I could find to my topic)
Hey guys, new member here...
I found a 1970 220D as well a week ago on craislist. I got it running after putting about $150 into a new starter, battery and a pair of glow plugs. I absolutely LOVE this car to death! I don't have an owner's manual for this little baby yet but i ordered one but I cant wait for it to arrive!
I have a few questions as well.
1. What kind and how much oil should i put into the engine? Everything's in German, and I learned a bit of that in school but not enough to read the words under the hood...
2. What kind of brake fluid does it take?
3. I guess she wanted to start SOOOO badly that she won't stop running even after I take the key out, how can I fix this?
4. The glow plug in the 2nd cylinder from the back keeps getting bent just a little bit, is this big a problem?
thanks ahead of time, everybody

1. uhhhh, I'm not familiar enough with these cars to tell you. I'd drain the oil and then add 4 qts and start adding additional half quarts until the dipstick says full.
2. Either Dot 3 or Dot 4
3. You have a vacuum leak. You need to find it and fix it. Search for that, there are plenty of excellent explanations here on the forum.
4. Bent where and how? Inside the threads or outside? If it's inside, you probably need to ream a bunch of carbon out. I can't think how it would be outside.

You 220D owners might want the Factory Service Manual CD set direct from Mercedes.

$19.99+$7 shipping.
I have one for my 123. The quality of the pics is poor but the shear volume of information that covers the 99% of the complete Car. Some say it is not MAC Computer friendly. The pages of the Manual are displayed in a PDF format.
Also to answer one of the origional questions. While the Fuel Injection Pump can be re-timed until you learn more about it I would leave it a lone.

well i got a Chilton's repair/maintenance manual on the car, it's helped quite a bit.
The car is still knocking a bit during idling and in higher RPMs... But it hasn't done anything worse yet. about the car not shutting off; i just haffta pop the hood and push the lever to the off position by hand XD
i just replaced the bent glow plug, i check it daily and the new one hasn't gotten bent yet... We're just gonna take it to a friend of mine who is a diesel mechanic we know and have him mess around with it and tell us if the metallic knocking is normal or not
Edit: My speedometer is stuck on 50mph, i'm hoping that i just need to replace the speedo cable, am I right? I wanna be 100% sure that that's what i need to do before i start tearing into it tho...
