Default 1987 300D ***RE: Diesels to Buy/Avoid

Greetings,
I am new to the MB Diesel World. I had a 1986 MB 300e gas powered wreck...drove like a champ, though it was thrashed.
Now I am considering a 1987 300D with 212K, for under $4K. Pics look great, the owner says it drives well, has new brakes, tires, and new climate control.

Any advice on what to check for/ask for before going forward with a purchase.....where can I find specs for this car? i.e., H.P. , Torque, gas mileage, etc.

This appears to be on the "buy" list and I did read a quote that it is one of the stronger diesels....(why?/how?)

Any tips from those of you have have cut yr teeth on MB Diesels would be much appreciated.

-Syko.

I had a 1985 300SD Trubo. I purchased new and drove it 170,000 miles with no problems, mint condition, everything worked except the AC. I sold it about three years ago to a local man who is running it still with about 200k on it. These cars last forever.

Just make sure to have the valves adjusted about every 15,000 miles and keep the RPM's as low as you can. High revs are very bad on a Diesel.

Another thought...I once was looking at an 87 300SDL and the salesman told me the turbo had just been replaced under a recall put out by Mercedes. Any truth this "recall"?

Hello all,
Well I have accquired on of the "avoid" Diesels. I have a 1990 350 SDL turbo and I need to either have the injector pump rebuilt or find a replacement for my first Mercedes. If anyone can help me please answer as quickly as possible.
Thanks in advance.

I am looking at a 95 E300d. I was told that it would be hard to find parts for since it was only offered for one year. Sould I avoid this one?

Sorry everyone i dont get on as often as i used too. Yes that recall is real on all 1987 Mercedes with the 603 engine it was the trap-oxidizer that caused the problem and Mercedes will still honor this recall and if any damage was caused to the turbo they would also replace that.

No there is no reason to avoid this car in fact IMO it may one day be one of the most desired as it has the newer look with the same excellent quality of all W124s
