Default Diesel engine part

looking for some help. I have a older mercedes diesel, and I am wondering if someone can tell me a little more about my picture included. I have circled the part I am inquiring about and any info on it will be a great help.

what is the line and where is it supposed to lead to. Is it supposed to be connected or free hanging?
thanks again

That line is the crankcase breather tube. It should be connected somewhere that allows crankcase vapors to be drawn into the intake to be burned. It may also have a connection that allows oil mist to settle and drip back into the crankcase.

First off, thanks for the quick response.

Second, that isn't a real pic of my engine. I just "googled" it and found what I needed to ask the question. So the extra heater hose isn't a problem on my vehicle.
