Default starter remove

1 ... un hook battery.... 2 make sure you unhook battery ..3.. jack up car and put jack stand where it wont be in your way.i put stand under controll arm....you need a good quality metric alen key socket for bolts in bac facing forward.unbollt bracket from engine bloc in front of starter..tilt starter down to remove wires. i changed my 300sd starter in 25 minets.must turn steering to get it down once its unbolted.with new starter i ran a wire from one allen bolt to neg battery terminal for a better ground,,dont like the stock ground to sheet metal...put bac small bracket on front of starter to block even if sombody says you dont need it.good luck.

lb, Initially, make sure it is your starter, and not your battery, dirty terminals, or something else, as You will regret after pulling this starter.

I just did mine this AM, on a '83 300D turbo, and in addition to stated above comments:

I pulled battery, battery tray, heat shield, & air cleaner. I undid the trans fill tube top fastener. I used a 5/8" piece of a 10mm allen wrench to insert in the socket head bolt. MAKE sure that head is clean & clear. I used a 10mm (duh) box wrench on that allen piece with a large box wrench around the 10mm to provide additional leverage. It pops like you broke the bolt, but is just breaking free.

I dropped the trans support (supporting with floor jack) about 3" to gain access to lower bolt. Not sure this is required, but I used a socket allen and removed lower bolt.

(4) 10mm bolts holding the angle bkt. at rear of starter. Remove batt and control cables and you are there. Turn wheels right stop, and drop starter out thru the opening provided. Nice engineering.

My car was raised about 18" but I am a good sized guy.

Good Luck and be safe in jacking and blocking.
