Default back up lamps are always on

My back up lamps are always on (when the key is turned, that is). Why? The white reverse lights. It's a 1982 240d, manual. The fuse is good; all other lights are good. Any ideas where to start?

Hey thanks. Where is that shifter located? I've got the Haynes in front of me. Is it in the tail light bulb holder assembly, or neath the dash?

Oh I see, the gear shifter. The stick. That makes sense: that would be the place where the back up lamp is told "the car is now in reverse". Thanks.

Switch does seem to be the problem. I have it out now, but can't get it open (general spray of contact cleaner and working of the little silver rod hasn't worked). Is there a way to get it open?

Thx
