Default automatic shift lever play

Hello, a quick question as I am new to my 82 300d turbo. It has an automatic transmission and the shift lever has about 1/2 or more play in it to the point of making a little confusion as to the gear it is in. Is this normal or could there be a linkage problem, etc.? Thanks, Steve

Linkage for sure!

Climb under and inspect everything connecting the lever on the tranny......there is only a rod, clips, and the shift lever connecting from the tranny...could be the shift lever too.

Thanks Bob, I will be sure and do just that. I have a lot to check out and will add that to the list, problem is I enjoy driving it so much that I have found little time to get to poking around, that and reading up on it. Thanks again, Steve

it sounds like you have a shifter linkage bushing that is worn out or even missing

Thanks vytamenc, can I get at this from the cab of the car or do I need to go under? Anyone know where I might get said bushing? What is it made of? Thanks a lot, I still have not fixed this and had forgotten the post. Steve

ok, back to this question from months ago. I have not replaced said bushing yet and now occasionally it pops into neutral. I just move shift lever back to drive and all is well. I am wondering if there is so much slop in shift lever without bushing as to cause this or something more ominous? Any ideas? Sources for bushing? How to get to it? Thanks, Steve
