Question Access the Fuel Sensor

Hello to all. This is my first post. I am new to this forum. I have a 83 240D. I had rebuilt the engine. Complete overhaul. I have been driving the car for a year now and no problems.

I had recently installed a used instrument cluster. My odometer now works and I have dash lights. My problem is the fuel gage does not work. I know it is not the gage itself because the old one did not register either. So I reckon it is the fuel sensor. My Haynes manual does not cover this procedure. How do I access the sensor? From the trunk or do I have to drop the fuel tank?

I will check for loose wiring before I change out the sensor. These sensors (new) are about $200.00. Could it be anything else but the sensor. It is not the gage.

Are most fuel sensors of that era alike. Will a 300TD fuel sensor work in my 240D? I will probably go to the junk yard to get one since they are so expensive. This all depends on how easy or hard the fuel sensor is to get at.

I have other issues but I will take it one at a time. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks to all. One can send me emails also. More than welcome to.

I have read of some possible of the Sending Unit being cleaned.

On mine you can get at the sending Unit by carefully removing the First Aid Kit Compartment that is by the Rear Window.

When I looked up the part on one of the internet parts sites they sold one for a specific range of Chassis Numbers. So one from another Car may or may not work in yours.

The fuel gage on my '82 300 TD became inoperative. My Indie Mechanic removed the sensor from the fuel tank and reported that it was "crudded-up" with algae. He carefully cleaned it up, reinstalled it and it has worked ever since.

Don't invest in a new one before you first try this!
