Question '87 300TD - Repair or Sell?

I thought going through a cyclinder head crack 3 years ago (replaced with updated head) would make my favorite car bullet proof forever. Only 215,000 miles and in amazing condition (though clear coat just starting to give way - frequently detailed). We've owned this car for 17 years and it only had 24,000 when we purchased it. Maintained it by the book and already replaced shocks, front end, typical wear items.

But, on a trip from San Diego my son noticed smoking...then Lots of smoking. Luckily got it to favorite repair shop, but apparently head gasket gave at #1 cylinder allowing oil into it and simultainously starving the turbo of oil (yes, it needs replacing, but housing is fine). Never ran hot, oil light only briefly came on (1 block from repair shop). Garage initially put just under 5 quarts of oil in at the time.

Repair shop is quoting $600 to take off head, and then probably $1k ~ $2k to do all engine repairs. Plus AC compressor finally developed a diagnosable leak ($700 with regular R12 installed). Everything else is great, new Euro glass headlamps, brand new GoodYear tires on chrome SL rims, interior spotless, 3rd seat, excellent interior, two dings on exterior.

Repair shop offered $1k for purchase, Sacramento repair place offered $2 ~ 3k for purchase after seeing pictures. Totally torn on what to do.

Would really appreciate comments & thoughts. Still preferred this one over our 2001 320E wagon - better ride, better MPG, bigger cargo area. But it's not a spring chicken. Suggestions?

Default 300tdt

I have a 1987 300tdt with 335,000 miles and have owned it since 1990.
I have replaced one head at 160,000 miles and all has been great since then.
I believe it is the best wagon, diesel or gas, mercedes has ever made.
It would be a great dis-service to take this one off the road- just look at what you could get for the $3500 you need to spend on repairs-NOTHING.
Just fyi, my oldest is getting his license this year and he loves and WANTS the old girl- who knew?

Can you replace the car for one in like condition for what it would cost to repair. The typical way of figuring is if it dosen't cost more than half or one third the cost of replacement then repair.
