We have a 1980 300TD (Diesel) After putting 2500 into the car to fix the suspension and replace the A/C blower, we've ended up with an engine problem.

I realize this is a long shot but I've attached a short movie file (zipped) with the sound of the engine in case anyone recognizes what is making the screeching sound.

The long story is that my wife noticed that the car was trying to stall at the intersections and then stopped driving it. When I went to test the engine, it started making this high pitched screeching sound. About 10 seconds after starting it stalls.

The oil is full and along with the transmission fluid. The airconditioning is in the off position.

It may be a subtle point but it seems to start after I shortly after the engine starts and not while it is starting.

Any advise on what it may be would be greatly appreciated.

 

Thanks for your reply. Just a sanity check. Would a clogged fuel filter result in a screeching sound as the engine runs? I will upload the video to youtube as soon as I get back into town.
