Default 300D Cold Shift Issue

Hi all - I'd appreciate any advise on an issue I'm having with my 81 300D. When the car is cold (until I've driven about 5-8 miles), shifts are occurring very late and hard. Once warmed up, they are perfect. I've searched the forums, and found similar issues, but none that are only occurring when the car is cold. Before I try to hunt down a vacuum issue, does anyone think it might be something else? The trans fluid and filter are new.

Many thanks

Zac Austin,TX

Naz, thanks for the reply.

It was doing this before the fluid change. I stopped by the Mercedes Dealer here to buy the filter and gasket, and they told me to use Dextron III. I'm pretty sure this is what it had in it before, as well, since there was a half used bottle in the trunk.

Were they wrong?

Also, note I did not pull the torque converter drain -- i only dropped the pan and refilled.

no the ATF IS DEX 3 is the right fluid so thats ok,sounds more like the valve body inside the box as excessive gange it really needs to be strip dwn,on valve body it as a few actuator if the oil gallers are not clen you do get harsh or dely gear changes,so basicaly it needs to be checked out this gear box as vaccum contrls for the vavle body.i would check all the vaccum lines..
