Default 240D transmission problem

Hi, I just got a Benz 240D '81 Automatic Trans. and with only 108,000 miles, I really love the car... but 5 days later the transmission broke!! And telling you the truth I don't know anything about repairing or engines, anyway... i don't understood if the problem is just a simple thing because the R gear works perfectly but when I change to the others gears D,L etc it change but it doesn't move it feels like i'm in N but the odd thing is that it moves very slow just like when you stops pushing the brake pedal but as soon I push the gas pedal nothing happen just like if the gears is in Neutral. Some guy come to check it out and he told me that he can fix it for $850 including the parts... I ask if he knows whats wrong and he said he doesn't know because he has to open the transmission first... sounds like scam to me! Please if someone knows something about this kind of problem with the transmission please help me.

P.S. Any one knows how to read the transmission fluid meter, because the meter doesn't have any indication just 3 marks. Thanks.

Trans fluid level is ALWAYS the first thing to check. Fluid should be checked with car level, engine running car in park, parking brake on. Remove the dip stick, verify fluid is between full and add. Proper type is DEXTRON/MERCON. DO NOT fill to the full mark with the engine cold or not driven. Trans fluid expands as it warms up, so the cold level should be between the marks on the stick. Assuming its full, put it momentarily in each gear to allow the fluid to load all the hydrallic circuits. Then back to park and recheck level. If the fluid level is correct and it still wont engage, then a trans shop is required. Make very sure the shop chosen is VERY familiar with this era of trans and diesel MB's in general. Good Luck! I am assuming the engine revs up freely when its in D? I mention this because you might have a disconnected throttle link somewhere which means the trans is engaged but the throttle is not regulating the fuel. Get a second opinion.
