Default 240D early shifting: VM or Bowden cable ajdust?

My 1982 240D auto transmission is upshifting way too early - I'm in 4th by the time the car is at 25mph. What do I adjust to make the AT shift later - the Vacuum Modulator or the Bowden cable? I keep finding conflicting layman advice that supports both options. I recently replaced the VM because the car wasn't shifting at all higher than 2nd gear. The VM replacement fixed that, but now it's shifting way too early. thanks.

Default bowden

dang, i suspected as much. i couldn't find any Bowden-esque cable but i didn't know if i was missing it.

so does the early shifting problem sound like something that is likely adjustable with the VM? i installed the VM with the top adjustment exactly as out of the box. how much or little do you turn that key clockwise to adjust the shifting?

Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks and that your throttle linkage is all in good shape.
