RE: 2010 S-Class Diesel 43mpg
This engine makes sufficientpower and torque for an S. The economy of 43MPG could definitely helpM-B sell quite a few of these Hybrid sedans here.
You can bet the rear trunk badge will not say "S220" but something else to hide the fact you are driving a 4-cylinder diesel.
In a few years, $5.00 a gallon fuel will change the way we think about big sedans like the S Class -- I think the US market will be more than readyto embrace it.

I don't understand why it's in an S-Class. Surely people paying over 100k for a luxury car that can afford the upkeep can pay gas prices. I could see in an E-Class though

It's an S Classbecause even people who drive big sedans want a way to be responsible and "shrink their carbon footprint" in the verbiage of theleft wingeco-kooks.
You will surely see it in the E Class and probably in an SUV, too.

You are correct, Sir. Flagship models sometimesget cool features first, liketheself-leveling hydropneumatic suspension of the 1977 6.9 sedan. But the S definitely does not always get the cutting edge tech first.
