I recently picked up a 83 240D from a long term owner. Yesterday, while I was driving around, a loud clanking noise came fro. Under the car like something had fallen off and the gears stopped shifting. It made a grinding noise when I pushed the car as well. How screwed am I? Car is stick at 354k on odometer and probably has over 500k on it. Do they rebuild these? Has anyone went though this. before? Is there a market for non driving 240d?

 

Sound something like this? Countershaft bearing failed. Not rebuildable.
