Default 1975 240D purchase advice

Hello,

I'm a newbie here and have only owned 1 Mercedes (1998 C model) bu I have the opportunity to buy my neighbors 1975 240D. Problem is it's been sitting for a while. The car has 37,000 original miles on it and other than some dust, 4 flat tires, a dead battery and a few minor scratches it is in excellent shape. The interior looks virtually new and it has been garaged throughout it's life here in California. Literally driven by a little old man, there is no rust and the body is perfect other than one missing piece of trim and a couple minor door dings and surface scratches.

My neighbor can't drive any more and has 3 cars. The 240D hasn't been driven or even started in about 10 years so I'm sure it will take some work to get it running smooth again.

Could anyone give me a rough idea of what a fair value is for the car and also anything to look for in a 240D that has been sitting this long? I'm guessing I will have to drain the tank and perhaps flush the fuel system and I would of course flush the radiator, change all fluids, new tires etc.

Thanks!

I'd start at 500 due to a car sitting that long may take alot of seals, hoses and tinkering. But the car is worth more to parts out, but I hate to see a nice Benz parted out. Motor wise setting shouldn't of hurt the diesel just as a precaution I'd treat the tank for algea [ shouldn't have it] The electrical system could be the fun part especially if thats not your fourta. before I'd drain the tank I'd get a gallon of good fuel pull the hose from the fuel pump and put it into the jug for the first start up the return line will put the rest back into the tank. See how it runs before you start changing everything

Default Thanks!

Thanks for the advice dieselguy, this is very helpful. I hadn't thought about the hoses and belts. I'm sure they will need to be reploaded.

Much appreciated!
