why do you need to change the whole unit?

this relatively easy to fix not unless the housing is damaged.

I am not sure if it needs to be replaced yet. I just purchased the car with the assumption that the tranny is bad as a worst case scenario. I want to see if I can locate a replacement so I know what my options are when I pick up the car. The dealer estimated that the tranny was bad (black fluid) but it does still run and move. I didn't try to go far with it though. The question I have is do you spend the money to have it trouble shot and maybe repaired or just budget to swap it out. I got labor estimates in my area of about $500.00 for r+r of a new(used) unit, and I so far have located one for $1200.00. So i figured I would post here to see if any other units are around. Also, are there any other parts/components i should be looking at that may not come with a junkyard unit? Thanks Eric

dark fluid is just a burnt out clutch because of slippage. the specified clearance for play inside are not good anymore (normal is 1mm).

have it strip out, replace the burnt clutc disc and adjust by putting a thicker metal clutch disc which comes in different thickness.

getting a second hand transmission cannot guarantee long time use also, but by repairing it, you can be sure that what you have inside are all new.

i really wish i was just around your neighborhood so i can do it for you with less expense, time and good quality.
