Default Interesting question about a free car

Ok so one of my grandfather's friends, who is on his death bed, called the other night and said I could have his 1968 Mercedes, since he knows I love Mercedes. He said the exterior and interior are fine, but that the motor and tranny needed to be replaced. My question is, is it worth going to get it? I haven't seen it yet, but I don't have to pay for it either, it's free. Also is there a good reliable place to buy a motor and tranny for a car like this. I am not sure of the model yet, but I will find out soon. It's red with black interior, I think but I am not really sure.

A free 1968 Mercedes is definately worth going to get as long as you understand that this car needs some work and that work may take some time and money whether you're doing it yourself or having it done at a repair shop.
Then again, is the motor and tranny totally shot? or can it be rebuilt. But given that's it's a 1968, there are no or few annoying electronic computers you have to worry about when installing them parts so it's a great bargain. So getting this bad boy on the road shouldn't be comparingly too expensive. And hey, it might be a collectable.

If you would of said it was a 1998 and up Mercedes, I would of told you that you might be better off walking away from that one.

That was kind of my train of thought. The engine can easily be rebuilt. The problem with rebuilding the tranny, is that I don't know who could do it. I mean how many people would know how if they tried. Does anyone know who could rebuild that tranny? I will get the information soon.

Thanks,

FA
