1986 190E 2.3 Problem
Hi

I have a 1986 190E 2.3. When I start the car, it makes a loud clunking noise. The car is quiet and runs great when i'm driving it. It just makes the noise when i'm stopped. Can anyone tell me what this could be.

Zack,

Can you be a little more specific. If it only makes the clunking noise at idle, then you should be able to isolate the noise looking under the hood. The one noise problem at idle I had was the small shock that goes from the belt tensioner to the alternator. The shock mount at the alternator was worn (loose) and I had to replace the shock. I could see theshock vibrating at idle when I shined a light on the bolt/mount on the alternator. Replacing the shock fixed the noise problem.

Good Luck

Zack,

I don't think that a loose timing chain would cause a loud clunking sound at idle, then smooth out when driving, but if you are sure that it is a loose timing chain you may have a defective tensioner or tensioner rail. As far as the cost for repair, I can't answer that since I do my own repairs. You defenitely want to determine that it is the timing chain before someone goes into your engine. Did you remove the oil filler cap and tug on the timing chain?
