Default Returning Leased car Unregistered?

Hi all,

So my SLK lease is up in June and I want to just return it and walk away. However, my registration is up in March. My question is, can I return the car unregistered or registered as non-operating? Because I won't really be driving it, will be on vacay out of the country for like a month out of the 3. I didn't see anything in the lease agreement regarding whether the car has to be registered when I return it. Can anyone help? (I live in California if it matters).

Thanks a lot.
