I don't know if it would make any difference in this situation, but it's a donkey. I know donkeys have a different temperament from horses. Horse are afraid of everything where donkeys aren't. I've seen donkeys get pretty gnarly with humans and other animals, like dogs. You know, donkey rage. Still, my sensibilities have me agreeing with your girlfriend.

Also, I find it a bit strange that the two dogs are just sitting there the whole time. Even if the cat where a stuffed toy, every dog I know would be going nuts every time the donkey tossed it into the air. My dog would think the whole thing was being orchestrated just for him and he would jump right in there and start tearing at the cat himself. He'd probably ride the donkey, too.

either way, they are some great pictures, but you very well may have a good point about it being a donkey, and being meaner.
