windshield wiper is going when signal indicator is used

Our 1976 300D left turn signal has been flashing very fast. Now the windshield wipers are starting to come on every time the left turn signal is turned on.
It's all on the same stick.
Any ideas?

Normally a fast turn signal indicates that at least one bulb is burned out. Can't explain the wiper issue.
